Sometimes living in the location or style of home of your dreams means sacrificing on some space. You might have to give up hope of having an entire room to call your home office or might not have any sort of outdoor space. It's actually the lucky ones living in condos in Yorkville and apartments downtown that do have a balcony where they can go and relax. If you're one of these people you might be looking to make that space your own by adding a little patch of garden. Here are some tips for making the most of this limited space so that you can really enjoy the outdoors in your Toronto condo or home in Calgary.

The first thing you need to do is look at the regulations for your building when it comes to adding greenery to your balcony. You don't want to spend all of the time and money for flowers and shrubs only to then find out that none of it is allowed to be there. If you're living in Toronto waterfront condominiums you are likely going to want to talk with someone on the condo board or look at the agreement you signed when moving into the building. In an apartment you will be talking to the superintendent or looking at your lease. One of the things you should definitely be looking for is weight restrictions.

Once you know what you are and are not allowed to do with your balcony space it's time to start thinking about how you are going to care for your plants. You need a system for getting them the proper amount of sunlight and watering them without ruining the balcony space below you. There is also usually more wind the higher you go and you want to make sure that your plants are going to always be secure in their location. If you're planting a garden outside of your second floor home at Punta Mita condo rentals than this may not be a concern but it could matter quite a bit on the twentieth floor.

Make a map of where all of your plants are going to go and decide what sort of containers you are going to use for them. While you may like the look of ceramic containers you may find that it adds significantly to the weight of your garden. Once you know your materials it's time to start designing your garden. Speak with an expert at a garden centre near your Vancouver home or Toronto condo sales to find out which plants are best suited to growing in pots and containers outdoors in your area. And if you're planning to buy any trees or shrubs make sure they fit in the elevator.
